Born to Run

Great Read: (via Syd O) For all you evolutionary biologists, there's a great article in Discover about a new theory that our appearance and uniqueness as humans has a lot to do with our evolved ability to run - maybe to outrun animals while hunting! It turns out we can outrun almost any animal (think marathon runners) because animals eventually overheat (you can check the rectal thermometer) and collapse and then we kill them. Many of our features makes us good runners - Achilles' tendon, huge butts, long necks and tendons that allow our heads to stay steady focused on our target, and hairless bodies with many sweat glands to wick away heat so we don't overheat.
