The Gingrich Backlash

David Brooks discusses how the Dems - in charge of the White House and Congress, and dealing with an economic catastrophe - will submit to the liberal wing of the party and increase deficit spending and the national debt. I think his options are right, but I also think - as a Republican - he's trying to predict the worst outcome for conservatives.

I'm not sure what he's trying to do outside hate on dem's. People don't want taxes cut. The govt raised taxes during the Great Depression so they could balance the budget and it only worsened the depression. And aren't GOP's for lower taxes?

We need to implement that farm/farmers program. Fixes the health care, employs people and helps the environment. It's what needs to be done.

Or we could just print a bunch of $, drop it from airplanes. Sure it would raise inflation but people would prob dump that back into the economy.

I don't get the absolute gall of this guy. The last time Dems had control of the Congress and the presidency they balanced the budget and paid down the national debt. We are barely eeking through a disasterous eight years of a GOP administration and Congress (the first six years) that added more to the national debt than all previous administrations combined. Reagan did the same thing, rail on big government and then increase deficit spending. I think it is pretty weak to try and go with "Dems and big government" after Reagan and W.
