Chris Matthews just asked a GOP operative whether McCain was using the Mrs. Doubtfire strategy. Remember in the movie how Robin Williams is a screwed-up dad, and loses his kids, threw it all away and the only way for him to get a second chance was to dress up like someone else and try to be a better parent to his kids? Maybe that's what McCain is doing. He admits the last 8 years are horrible - but who has the gusto to ask for a 2nd chance? So, he dresses up his "reformer/maverick" creds and tries to sneak his way back into the house!
I like that metaphor.
